Mia McKenna-Bruce is back in the spotlight after The Guardian tipped the latest instalment of ITV’s The Lady as one of the night’s standout watches, with the drama reaching its penultimate chapter as Jane Andrews’ relationship with Tommy Cressman edges closer to collapse. The episode was flagged as the moment when Jane’s hopes of a proposal fall apart before a tense confrontation in London changes everything.
The buzz around the show is hardly surprising. ITV has billed The Lady as a four-part true-crime drama inspired by the real-life story of Jane Andrews, the former royal aide whose rise from a working-class background in Grimsby to Buckingham Palace ended in one of Britain’s most notorious murder cases. The broadcaster says the partly fictionalised series was written by Debbie O’Malley, produced by Left Bank Pictures, and made for ITV1, ITVX and BritBox.
McKenna-Bruce takes on the central role of Andrews, while Natalie Dormer plays Sarah Ferguson and Ed Speleers stars as Thomas Cressman. ITV’s own promotional material has teased that once Jane falls for businessman Cressman, “cracks” begin to form in the romance she has pinned all her hopes on, with disastrous consequences. That setup has helped turn The Lady into one of the more talked-about dramas of the moment.
Part of the fascination comes from the real story behind it. Radio Times reports that Andrews answered a job ad in The Lady magazine in 1988 and went on to become dresser to Sarah Ferguson, moving from an ordinary life in Grimsby into the heart of royal circles. Years later, that fairytale unravelled in dramatic fashion, leading to the criminal case that now forms the backbone of ITV’s new series.
And while the subject matter is dark, McKenna-Bruce’s performance is winning attention. Radio Times praised the show’s two female leads, saying McKenna-Bruce brings depth and complexity to Jane Andrews, while Dormer adds plenty of presence as the Duchess of York. For viewers, that mix of royal intrigue, emotional fallout and true-crime tension is exactly why The Lady has become such a hot topic.
With the story now hurtling toward its final chapter, The Lady looks set to keep viewers hooked — and keep Mia McKenna-Bruce firmly at the centre of the conversation.
